Combating Malaria around the Globe

Malaria kills nearly half a million people every year. Additionally, researchers estimate that 50% of the world’s population is at risk of contracting the disease. Malaria is most commonly found in tropical and sub-tropical countries in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Americas, particularly in developing and under-resourced areas that carry a disproportionate share of the global health burden. Despite being a highly researched issue, malaria is one of the hardest diseases to identify accurately on a microscope slide.

Motic joined with Global Good, the Bill Gates-funded philanthropic arm of the Intellectual Ventures Laboratory, to build and train an AI scanner to detect and count malaria parasites in a blood smear. The EasyScan GO combines our whole slide imaging scanner with a custom image recognition software to provide expert-level diagnostics* in under 20 minutes.

Not only does the EasyScan GO relieve the workload burden on lab technicians and expert microscopists, but it is also a powerful tool for researchers who track and develop solutions for drug-resistant strains of malaria.

The tiny malaria-carrying mosquito has been called the deadliest animal in the world. But in the EasyScan GO — small, fast, and deployable anywhere — it has finally met its match.

Cancer Diagnostic* Expertise in Sub-Saharan Africa

Cancer is on the rise across the globe and currently causes nearly 1 in every 6 deaths. The number of new cases is expected to increase dramatically in the next two decades. Low- and middle-income countries carry a disproportionate share of the global cancer burden, with approximately 70% of cancer-related deaths occurring in under-resourced areas.

Earlier detection, diagnosis*, and treatment could drastically change the outcomes for these patients, but many regions do not have nearly enough pathologists to cover the caseload. This provider gap is particularly extreme in sub-Saharan Africa, which has the highest global mortality rate for breast cancer.

Motic has brought our scanners and teleconsultation* platform to hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa in conjunction with the American Society of Clinical Pathology’s Partners in Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment initiative. Using our scanners and cloud-based case management platform, resource-strapped clinicians upload cases for expert pathologists in the United States to read and diagnose*.  

Since the launch of the project in the summer of 2018, nearly 400 cases have been shared. And we’re just getting started.

Intelligent Detection for Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis impacts every part of the world and kills nearly 2 million people each year. Though it is a curable disease, tuberculosis nevertheless continues to impact our most vulnerable communities. Nearly 95% of TB cases and deaths occur in developing countries due to inadequate detection that results in delayed care.

Motic is creating the EasyScanTB for rapid, intelligent TB detection. The EasyScanTB is built to be an inexpensive and easily deployable scanner capable of detecting and diagnosing* up to 50 cases per day (the standard output of a TB lab, as defined by the World Health Organization). It will also allow pathologists to monitor treatment outcomes and disease recurrence.
