Where: Osaka International Convention Center, Osaka, Japan
RIHGA Royal Hotel, Osaka, Japan
Booth: 3-81
Cancer research has made remarkable progress since the beginning of the 21st century. Today, the whole human genome can be sequenced in a few days. The former president Obama’s announcement of the “Precision Medicine Initiative” in his 2015 State of the Union address is still fresh in our minds. Here in Japan, the Council for Promoting Genomic Medicine has been set up and various centers are being established. At recent international conferences, especially in the field of clinical oncology, immunotherapy has also received a great deal of attention as the fourth therapeutic method following surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Hence, emerging challenges in genomic medicine and immune checkpoint inhibitors are likely to be the main topics of this meeting. It is also fascinating to learn how cutting-edge research fields including artificial intelligence(AI) and genome editing are being utilized within cancer research.
Innovative thinking and ideas from young researchers are indispensable in keeping up with the diversity and rapid progress of cancer research. Following on from last year’s meeting, this meeting will continue to offer extended sessions for young researchers. I would like attendees to demonstrate Japan’s strengths in cancer research. Additionally, there will be a special symposium entitled “Advances in basic and clinical medicine in the past 10 years,” which will review recent progress in basic and clinical medical research, unimaginable just a few years ago.
Although the new cancer drugs being created through successful research are great news for patients, there is concern that high drug prices may threaten Japan’s health care system in the future. At this point in time, we intend to gather opinions from various stakeholders including patients, health care professionals, government and related academic societies and provide recommendations to enlighten the public. I hope the meeting will provide the first step towards understanding the current situation through deliberating challenges related to medical expenses and the health care system.
A lively phrase “Kiwametarude Gan Kenkyu” in the Osaka dialect, which means “Diving Deeper into Cancer Research” has been chosen as the slogan for this meeting. I hope that a wide range of researchers from different fields will feel connected to it, and that the general public will feel our passion for cancer research through it. Scientific research can sometimes lead to isolation; I hope that the meeting will forge new networks between researchers and between scientists and clinicians, thus leading to new collaborations. The meeting poster features the design of a DNA double helix made with Takoyaki, Osaka’s iconic food, in the hope that you will enjoy the food of Osaka as well as active discussions during the meeting. The entire team looks forward to welcoming you to Osaka.
